Foreign frog spawn revelation

This post is several weeks late but I still thought it worth airing. This forest pond had tadpoles a plenty; see, it’s taken me so long to publish this post that the spawn of the title has magically developed into tadpoles! It was only when my walking partner and I looked more closely, that we noticed that the overwhelming majority of the tadpoles were swimming in a clockwise direction. We figured those going against the norm and deserving of on the spot fines must have been foreigners, not organised like us Brits. Probably Italian or Greek!

Parking limited
Parking spaces on the pond margins were at a premium, not unlike some local towns I could mention. Nice to find somewhere with so many tadpoles. Unfortunately, many of the ponds of my childhood have long since dried up – frog spawn, tadpoles, frogs but a distant memory. Would today’s children even know what frog/toad spawn was, let alone know automatically where you’d be able to find some?

By the way, frog spawn is generally found in large clumps (a few thousand eggs), whilst toad spawn is always laid in long chains about six and half feet (2 metres) long, usually wrapped around pond vegetation.
